Each month, Netflix updates its catalog of movies and shows that are available for streaming. Some titles are removed, some remain the same, and new shows and movies are added. The following list contains the top 16 titles that are new on Netflix for August. Our list contains both movies and TV shows in a wide variety of genres and there is something to satisfy every viewing taste. New TV Shows on Netflix Now

Episodes of original and classic TV shows are popular choices for streaming, especially when viewers want to settle in for a “bingefest” and watch several episodes of the same series. The new episodes of the following shows make them excellent choices for binge viewing or just one or two at a time.

“The Killing”

The fourth and final season of The Killing is now streaming on Netflix, making it a perfect show for binge viewers. This crime thriller is set in Seattle and follows the exploits of detectives Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder as they investigate murders.

“Lost Girl”

The fourth season of Lost Girl is now streaming on Netflix. With the fifth season set to premiere on Network TV later this fall, now is the perfect time to catch up if you’ve never seen the show. The plot line follows the story of Bo, who was adopted and raised by a human family without realizing she was actually a succubus, which many consider to be a mythical, evil spiritual being. The story follows the challenges Bo faces as she learns to control her powers.

New On Netflix -- Once Upon a Time“Once Upon a Time”

The third season of Once Upon a Time is now available on Netflix. Having all three seasons available for streaming is helpful to viewers that want to be up to date on the series before the fourth season premieres on ABC later this fall. This fantasy series is set in Storybrooke, Maine, a modern day small town which is populated with characters from popular children’s stories. The story follows the exploits of Snow White, Prince Charming and the evil queen, who no longer remember their past, fairy tale lives.

In addition to these popular TV Shows, the third season of the science-fiction series Continuum and the first season of British crime drama Southcliffe are also new on Netflix now. Netflix Original comedy series Bojack Horseman will premiere on August 22, with its entire first season available for streaming. The fourth season of the Syfy supernatural thriller Haven also becomes available for streaming on Netflix on August 12.

Action Movies

Sometimes you need a little action and adventure to get your heart pumping — one of the following movies that are new on Netflix should do the trick!

“Dead in Tombstone”

This action packed, gun slinging western stars Danny Trejo as a “good” bad guy seeking revenge and Mickey Rourke in the role of Satan himself. Casting Rourke in the role of Satan should not surprise anyone who watched him in the cult classic movie 9 and 1/2 Weeks. If you’ve seen the movie, you probably always suspected that he was the devil.


Jason Statham stars as a widowed former DEA agent trying to start his life over in a small Louisiana town with his young daughter. Sadly, a meth dealer played by James Franco is determined to see the agent’s past catch up with him.

Romantic Drama

Need a heart-tugging drama to curl up to on the couch? Try one of these romantic dramas.

“The Immigrant”

Jeremy Renner, Marion Cotillard, and Joaquin Phoenix star in this intense, dark romantic movie about a young polish immigrant who is forced into a life of prostitution to earn the money to care for her dying sister. Will the mysterious magician who crosses her path come to her rescue?

“Missing William”

A young wife must put her artistic career on hold to care for her ailing husband. What will she do when a long lost flame unexpectedly reenters her life?

Sometimes the best movies are the ones that are based on real life.


This heartwarming story of courage and determination follows the real life journey of 14 year old Laura Dekker and the two years that she was alone at sea, sailing around the world.

“The Battered Bastards of Baseball”

This Netflix original covers the true story of the formation of an indie baseball team in the 1970s, the Portland Mavericks.

“Brian’s Song”

This 1971 hit movie stars James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. It tells the true story of the rivalry that turned into friendship for Chicago Bears team members Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, and Piccolo’s battle with cancer.

“Mad Max”

Watch the original 1979 classic that started the cult franchise series. The film is set in a future Australia where low fuel and other scare resources have caused civilization to begin to break down. Outlaw bikers have begun to terrorize the countryside, and Mel Gibson stars as Max, one of the few remaining police officers that travel the roads seeking to quell the anarchy.

“Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV and Rocky V”

Viewers can now watch the rise, fall and comeback of fictional boxer Rocky Balboa. The first five movies of the classic Rocky series, starring Sylvester Stallone, are streaming now on Netflix.
