10 Best Romantic Movies on Netflix
If being in love makes you want to break out in song and dance, then one of these musicals may be the perfect Valentine’s Day movie for you!
West Side Story (1961)
Starring Natalie Wood, Russ Tamblyn, Richard Beymer and Rita Moreno, this movie originally won 10 Academy Awards. The film is a modern twist on Shakespeare’s classic drama, Romeo and Juliet. In this version of the tragic tale, the lovers must overcome the objections of their rival street gangs, rather than the traditional Italian houses, who battle for supremacy in the streets of New York City.
In a similar star-crossed lovers vein, this movie stars Olivia Newton John and John Travolta. If images of sock hops, greasers and poodle skirts make you nostalgic for the 1950s and high school drama, this musical is for you!
Somewhere in Time (1980)
This is a hauntingly romantic film. A young playwright, played by Christopher Reeve, falls in love with the picture of a young woman who was an actress from an earlier century. Obsessed, he finds a way to travel back in time to meet her, and the two fall in love.
Sometimes, the classics touch our hearts the most.
Jane Eyre (1983, 1996)
Netflix has two versions of this classic romance that viewers can stream — the 1983 version with Timothy Dalton and the 1996 version with William Hurt.
Both films feature plenty of twists and turns as the lovers must face complications caused by differences in age and social position, an insane wife locked away upstairs, mood swings, rivals for affection, fire and destruction. If you like to watch movies about love that overcomes against all odds, this story is for you!
This modern classic features the acting talents of Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg and is one of the best romantic movies that just became available for streaming on Netflix. Death will not stop true love as Sam continues his devotion to Molly, even when their lives are shattered by his murder.
The Great Gatsby (1974)
This literary classic is about a love triangle and stars Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. The film is based off of the famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and is set in “the roaring ’20s.” The story centers around the actions of three main characters: the millionaire Gatsby, who is obsessed with the beautiful Daisy, who is married to Tom. Unfortunately for Daisy, her husband Tom is completely unfaithful and has a mistress. The unbridled passion of the central characters results in tragedy and death.
Love Story (1970)
It is impossible to not cry when you watch this film starring Ryan O-Neal and Ali MacGraw. Despite the tragedy of the film and the tears that it inspires, this movie remains one of the best romantic movies of all time. The lovers meet in college and fall hopelessly in love.
Watching their relationship blossom and develop, viewers can’t help but fall in love with them and root for them, as the lovers marry. Of course, Oliver’s family objects, and his father disowns him. Their love endures great hardships, and despite some sad moments, if you are a true romantic at heart, you will not want to miss this film.
After all the tears inspired by films earlier in the list, you might need something less dramatic. After all, you are in love, so take a break with a movie that provides some much needed laughter!
Failure to Launch (2006)
This is a lighthearted and fun film that stars Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker. This comedy proves that it’s not just women who have a biological clock that is ticking. In the film, Tripp (played by McCounaughey) is 35, still living at home with his parents. Parker plays a relationship consultant who is hired by Tripp’s parents to help him grow up, get a girl, and move out and on with his life. Comedy ensues when Parker and Tripp fall in love.
Serious Moonlight (2009)
This movie stars Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton. The dark humor in this comedy almost makes it an atypical romance or even an anti-romantic film.
What would you do if you came home to find out the love of your life was getting ready to leave you and fly off to Paris with a much younger female? Would you be upset? Would you cry? Louise decides that she can’t let her husband go, so she duct tapes him to a chair and decides to hold him hostage until he falls back in love with her. Things get complicated when thieves break in and tie her up, as well. In more ways than one, this movie will hold you and your loved one “captive.”
For couples who prefer a bit more sizzle in the romantic films that they watch together, consider this one we’ve submitted as one of the best romantic movies on Netflix …
Blue Valentine (2010)
Starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, this movie is about a couple’s romance that has become stagnant. As they struggle to get through their daily lives, they begin to reminisce about the way things used to be, and start to remember the passion that they once shared.
