Programming your Cox Cable remote is not hard, but sometimes the instructions that come with it can be difficult. IT doesn’t help that the amount of button can also look intimidating to many people. We will walk you through how to program your Cox Cable DVR 8820 remote in just a few simple steps.

Before you begin programming you should take note of a special feature that may make it easier for you to program, it is called Back Lighting. If you look at the bottom right button on the remote you will see a white button with a shape that resembles a light bulb. Press and hold this button to back light the keys, making them easier to see. Unfortunately back lighting will only remain active for 10 seconds at a time.

Cox Cable Remote: Quick Programming

This is a quick and easy method to set your remote to operate up to three devices. Typically you would want it to operate your TV, stereo system and DVD or VCR. It may be complicated at first, but we tell you how to do it in four simple steps.

Start by locating the code for the device you want to program. If your device is not listed then skip ahead to the next section on Searching for the Code

  1. Turn on the device you wish to program
  2. Press and hold both the MUTE and SELECT keys until the device light blinks twice
  3. Press the device key (TV, AUX, or DVD). The LED for the device should remain lit
  4. Aim the remote at your device and press and hold the item number that corresponds to your device until the item turns off.

The remote automatically saves the code.

Searching for the Code

When you have a unit not listed in the previous step it is still easy to program your remote.

  1. Turn on the device you wish to program
  2. Press and hold both the MUTE and SELECT keys until the device light blinks twice
  3. Press the device key (TV, AUX, or DVD). The LED for the device should remain lit
  4. Aim the remote at your device and press and hold the SELECT key. When your device turns off, release the SELECT key. This allows the remote to search for a code, so you may be holding the key and pointing at your device for more than a minute.

The remote will save the code when you release the button.

Power for All

Instead of turning on each device individually, wouldn’t it be nice if you pushed a single button to turn everything on? It is easy to program.

  1. Turn your devices on
  2. Aim the remote at your device
  3. Press and hold the POWER key for two seconds, until the device turns off
  4. Repeat the process for each device until they turn off

Clearing a Device Key

Your VCR (or any other device) has finally died on you, and you no longer need your remote to operate it so you want to wipe it from your controls. It is very easy to do with the Cox Cable remote.

  1. Press the device key (TV, AUX, or DVD).
  2. Press and hold both the MUTE and SELECT keys until the device light blinks twice
  3. Press in the code 9-92
  4. Press the device key again and it should blink twice.

You have now removed the device code from the programmed memory
