9 Great HBO Go Shows to Stream

Grab some popcorn and get ready to enjoy a show. The following nine programs are the most popular HBO Go Shows from current and past years that are streaming now!

Game of Thrones

This HBO original series has easily become the most watched series on the planet. Earlier this year, the finale to Season 4 garnered over 7.1 million viewers. The show is based on the popular series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin where kings, and a dragon-birthing queen, battle for control of the mythical realm of Westeros. This world’s society is based upon Medieval era feudalism, and is filled with lavish sets and costumes, political intrigue, plots, murders, romance, seduction, icy zombies and dragons. If you haven’t watched the show before, you have plenty of time to get caught up before the next season premieres.

Real Time with Bill Maher & Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

These two popular weekly HBO talk shows feature a comedic slant, and viewers can stream via the HBO Go app. Maher’s show features variety of guests from different backgrounds, such as Micheal Moore, Ann Coulter, Jason Alexander and Chris Matthews. Oliver’s show features funny, insightful, and often politically incorrect commentary on the week’s news. As an example, Oliver recently encouraged viewers to email Russia’s Vladimir Putin and ask him to “go get those geckos,” after it was reported that Russia had lost contact with a satellite that contained several organisms, including five geckos.

True Blood

Viewers that enjoy supernatural dramas and dark humor will enjoy this HBO original series. It’s set in the fictional small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. The series is based on the concept that humans have unknowingly been living side by side with vampires and other mythical creatures for centuries. In the story, artificial blood has been recently discovered and about half of the vampire race has decided to come forward and proclaim their existence and demand the same rights and treatment as humans. Other vampires think that there is no way that humans can peacefully exist with vampires once they know they truly exist.

The series covers the struggle of humans, vampires and other mythical races as they come to grips with the implications. The seventh and final season is currently airing, and is one of the most watched HBO Go Shows. The last episode is currently scheduled to air on August 22nd, which will undoubtedly make the series popular for viewers seeking a new show to binge watch from beginning to end.

Viewers that prefer period based shows will enjoy streaming this crime drama set in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the era of prohibition and the rise of organized crime in America. The show stars Steve Buscemi as a corrupt politician and underworld boss. The show is currently in its fifth and final season. Eight episodes are planned for the final season, with the first scheduled to air on September 7th, so there’s still time to catch up on previous seasons before the show ends.

The first season of this crime drama just finished airing, and features 8 episodes. Set in Louisiana, it follows the adventures of two homicide detectives over 17 years as they track a serial killer. While a release date hasn’t been announced for the second season, the drama’s setting is expected to move to California and feature at least three new lead actors.

This HBO original sitcom just finished broadcasting its third season, with the 4th scheduled to air sometime in 2015. The show follows the exploits of an aspiring writer in her twenties, Hannah, and her circle of close friends as they struggle to make ends meet and find their way while living in New York City.

The Leftovers

The first season of this HBO original is currently streaming, with the final episode of the season set to air on September 7th. The series is set in a small hamlet in New York. The show’s plot centers around how the people in a small town are coping three years after 2% of the world’s population has suddenly disappeared in what many believe to be the rapture. If you were left behind, would there be any reason to continue to try to be good?

In addition to posting original shows that are still in production, HBO also offers several originals no longer in production that remain popular with viewers that enjoy watching multiple episodes of the same show.
