Is Amazon Prime Worth Your Money?

Amazon Prime by Amazon is a new membership program that offers several benefits to its members. These benefits are specific to Amazon’s regular users and are most beneficial to those individuals who regularly make purchases or consume media online.

As with all memberships, you want to make sure you understand the details fully before you sign up. You also want to make sure you answer one critical question: Is it worth it?

What is Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is a membership program offered by Amazon Prime. This membership program comes with an annual cost and several lucrative benefits for those individuals who regularly shop online, stream videos and read eBooks.

What Benefits Does Amazon Prime Offer?

1. Instant streaming of movies and TV shows.

Amazon Prime members have access to instant streaming of movies and TV shows in the Amazon catalogue.

2. Instant access to Kindle Books.

Amazon Prime members have access to the Kindle Owner’s Lending Library, which includes more than 100 current and former New York Times bestsellers. Members can borrow up to one book a month with no due dates.

A note of caution: Not all Prime members will be eligible for this. To capitalize on this benefit, you must own a Kindle device that is registered to both the account and the eligible Prime account.

3. Free Two-Day Shipping.

Free two-day shipping is available on all eligible items. Amazon Prime eligible items will have a Prime symbol (right) next to their price.Amazon Prime Amazon Prime also provides the following benefits for shipping eligible products: Free standard shipping, free no rush shipping, and shipping upgrades to expedite delivery.

What’s the Cost?

As with many membership programs, Amazon Prime has a free trial. The Amazon Prime free trial lasts a month and affords all the features of a full membership. In signing up for the free trial, customers are required to provide payment information in case they decide to continue their membership. It is important to note that if you do not cancel your membership before the 30-day trial is over, you will have to pay the annual rate.

Amazon Prime is currently going for $79 a year. This fee is an annual charge and will be charged following your 30-day free trial.

Is It Worth It?

It’s only worth it if you utilize the benefits.

To determine if you will utilize the benefits ask yourself these questions:  Do you regularly make online purchases through Amazon? Do you regularly read Kindle eBooks? Do you regularly stream online videos? If you don’t do any of these activities regularly, then the Amazon Prime membership most likely won’t be of benefit to you.

If you do these activities, it’s important that you determine if you do them enough to warrant purchasing this membership. Here’s how you can figure out if you do these activities enough to warrant the $79 annual price of an Amazon Prime membership:

  1. You spend at least $7.00 a month on shipping Amazon products (or spend more than $79.00 a year). $7.00/month X 12 months= $84.00. (Your membership will have paid for itself)
  2. You have a NETFLIX membership and use it (or spend more than $79.00 a year on streaming videos).
  3. You purchase at least one eBook a month that is $7.00 or more. $7.00/book X 12 months= $84.00 (Your membership will have paid for itself).

If you’re still unsure if Amazon Prime is right for you, you can always give it a test run. Sign up for the Amazon Prime free trial which lasts for 30 days. Remember: If you decide it’s not for you, make sure you cancel before the trial’s end, so you don’t end up paying for it.

Do All Items Qualify For Prime Shipping?

  1. I LOVE AMAZON and I love my Amazon Prime membership … Although, I have found that some of the videos on Prime are not as good as Netflix, they have a LOT of overlap and let’s face it — you’re not going to get a lot of top first-run movies on Netflix or Prime.

I don’t buy as many books on my Kindle as I thought I would when I bought it, but I do love the “check out” books instead of buying. The big payback is free shipping — I buy almost everything at Amazon … literally. Deodorant, Razors — check. Traveling and forgot a cable at home — I can buy a new one and have it sent overnight for $4.

I know I buy more from Amazon than the average Joe … and I also know Prime is the Prime reason (pun intended). I love my Prime Membership and absolutely think it’s worth every penny.
