How to Program your XR2 Comcast Remote

Comcast has recently redesigned a few of their remotes, they are now smaller and easier to handler. The new Comcast remote controls are set with fewer buttons so it’s now easier to figure out the function you want.

The new XR2 and XR5 remotes are designed to improve the XFINITY TV experience. Just install the batteries and you are ready to go.

XR2 Comcast Remote: The Buttons

They buttons on the remotes are pretty basic, some of the buttons are for your X1 box and others are for devices you program. You have the basics such as Volume, Channel, Mute which are pretty self explanatory. Then you also have the buttons for watching shows such as Play/Pause, FF and Rew. There are, however, a few that are a little different.

  • TV Power and Alt Power – These are for your TV and devices you program, the X1 box must remain on at all times.
  • Replay – Rewinds 15 seconds of recorded programming or Live TV on an X1 DVR
  • Rec – Begins recording of the program you are watching
  • Xfinity – Brings up the main menu of the guide
  • Guide – One Press will bring up the TV listings, a second press will let you filter the listings
  • Exit – Lets you Exit the menu, stop recording, or returns you to the current point of a live program
  • Page Up/Down –lets you jump several rows in a menu or guide, skip 10 minutes on a recorded program or jump 5 minutes on a live program.
  • OK – Selects the highlighted item on a menu
  • Last – Returns you to a previous screen, or lists the last 9 items watched.
  • Info – Provides you with program information.
  • Setup – This is used to program the remote and your devices
  • A – On X1 DVRs it lets you access the help menu
  • B – shows a scaled video in the bottom right corner when the guide is displayed
  • C – Uses the Sports App to follow all the games
  • D – Delete DVR recordings

Programming the TV

  1. Locate the code for your television manufacturer on the Comcast Remote Control User Guide
  2. Ensure that your set-top box is on and turn the TV on
  3. Press the Setup button for three seconds, or until the light at the top of the remote changes from red to green.
  4. Enter the manufacturers code that you found earlier and the light should flash twice.
  5. Press the TV Power button.

If the TV turns off then the programming was successful, if not then repeat the steps using the next code for your manufacturer.

If you have used all the codes for your TV and it still doesn’t work then you will need to make the remote find the correct code by following the steps below;

  1. Ensure that your set-top box is on and turn the TV on
  2. Press the Setup button for three seconds, or until the light at the top of the remote changes from red to green.
  3. Enter 9-9-1 and the light should flash twice
  4. Press the Channel up key repeatedly, with a one second delay between each push, until the TV turns off.
  5. Press Setup to record the code the system found
  6. Press the TV Power button to ensure the TV turns off.

Programming an Audio Device

Sometimes you want to use a Surround sound system for the TV rather than the TV’s sound system. These simple steps will show you how to program the volume button to control the surround sound.

  1. Locate the code for your device manufacturer on the Audio Device Codes
  2. Ensure that your set-top box, TV and sound system are on
  3. Press the Setup button for three seconds, or until the light at the top of the remote changes from red to green.
  4. Enter the manufacturers code that you found earlier and the light should flash twice.
  5. Press the ALT Power button.

If the device turns off, then you have successfully programmed it. If it has not turned off them repeat the steps using the next manufacturers code.

If you have used all the codes for your sound system and it still doesn’t work then you will need to make the remote find the correct code by following the steps below;

  1. Ensure that your set-top box, TV and sound system are on
  2. Press the Setup button for three seconds, or until the light at the top of the remote changes from red to green.
  3. Enter 9-9-1 and the light should flash twice
  4. Press the Channel up key repeatedly, with a one second delay between each push, until the sound system turns off.
  5. Press Setup to record the code the system found
  6. Press the TV Power button to ensure the TV turns off.
