7 Amazon Prime Pilots You Won’t Want to Miss in Early 2015


Each year, Amazon debuts new pilots for their Amazon Instant Video platform. The pilots that receive the most votes from viewers will each be turned into an Amazon Original regular series. Amazon has just announced seven new upcoming Amazon Prime pilots that will premiere early in 2015.

Here’s a brief review of the plot and stars for each pilot, so get ready to stream your favorites and don’t forget to vote for the ones you like best!


The plot of this dark comedy is centered around the conflict that arises from family drama and is set in a small Virginia town. Sam Trammell of True Blood fame, stars as Richard Paxson, a corporate drone living in a big city that returns to his hometown 20 years later. Upon his return, Paxson must learn how to get along with his older brother in order to help save the family gun business. Moving home is complicated by Paxson’s wife and teenage children, who are use to a more liberal and urban lifestyle.

Additional actors and actresses appearing in the pilot are Jason Lee, Brian Dennehy, Laura Fraser, and Dreama Walker. The creators of the pilot are Sam Baum from the Lie to Me TV series and Sam Shaw from the TV series Manhattan. “Skull Island” director Jordan Vogt-Roberts will direct the pilot.

“Down Dog”

Josh Casaubon stars in this lighthearted comedy about a yoga instructor in Los Angeles named Logan Wood, who has just broken up with his much older girlfriend, Amanda, the owner of the yoga studio. After the breakup, Wood finds that he will need to learn some lessons from his past in order to move forward in the future.

The pilot also stars Paget Brewster, Lyndsy Fonseca, Will Greenberg, Andrea Savage, Amir Talai, Kris Kristofferson and Alysia Reiner. The pilot will be directed by Bradley Silberling from Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. The producers are Bob Cooper from RFK and Michael Fuchs from Death in the Modern Age.

“Mad Dogs”

Nothing makes one feel like an underachiever quite like being confronted by the visible evidence of an old friend’s success. That is the plot of this comedy pilot as several 40-something-year-old friends travel to tropical Belize and gather together at an old friend’s estate to celebrate his early retirement.

Steve Zahn, Billy Zane , Romany Malco, Michael Imperioli and Ben Chaplin star in the pilot, which is being co-produced with Sony Pictures Televison and directed by Charles McDougall of The Mindy Project.

“The Man in the High Castle”

The pilot for this drama is based on the 1962 book of the same name by Phillip K. Dick. The plot is centered around the lives of spies in the United States that tell what it is like living in an alternate world. In this world, the Allied powers have lost WWII and now various countries are all under the control of either Nazi Germany or the Japanese.

The pilot is written by Frank Spotnitz of The X-Files fame and directed by David Semel from Heroes. Actors in the pilot include: Luke Kleintank, Alexa Davalos, Rupert Evans, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Joel De La Fuente, Rufus Sewell and DJ Qualls.

“The New Yorker Presents”

This pilot is a series of various short documentaries. These shorts are meant to bring alive and expand on famous stories, articles and poems found within the pages of The New Yorker Magazine.

The pilot is being co-produced by Jigsaw Prods and Condé Nast Entertainment.

“Point of Honor”

Set in Virginia, this Civil War drama stars Nathan Parsons of True Blood as a West Point graduate who frees his family’s slaves at the start of the war, while continuing to fight for the South.

The pilot was written by Carlton Cuse and Randall Wallace of “Braveheart” fame, with Wallace also directing the pilot. ABC Signature Studios is co-producing the pilot as well.

“Salem Rogers”

The plot of this comedy is centered around the story of a former party girl supermodel, who winds up in rehab. Ten years later, she leaves her posh retreat and tries to renter the world of fashion to restart her career. Misadventures ensue when she searches for her former assistant who has become a published author and self-help coach while Rogers has been in rehab. Will Agatha be able to help Salem stay sober and recapture her former glory?

Actors in the pilot include Leslie Bibb, Rachael Dratch and Harry Hamlin. The pilot is being directed by Mark Waters of Mean Girls and was written by novice Lindsey Stoddart, who submitted the script through Amazon Studios online submission process.

Of special interest to the fans of the 2014 Amazon pilots, “Mozart in the Jungle” is a full series that became available December 23, 2014, just in time for the holidays!
