Are you on the lookout for the best new laptops of the year? Here are some of the best options for all lifestyles, whether you want a speedy cloud machine, a heavy-duty gaming device, a professional work computer, or just something that’s all-around good.
6 Best New Laptops
1. MacBook Air
Apple has a very tight hold of its operating system when it comes to laptops, so the only way to get the benefits of those Apple-unique apps and software is to buy products like the MacBook Air. The Air is designed to be extra-light, but this laptop also comes with a 13-inch screen, a 1.4GHz Intel Core i5 on the base model, and one of the longest battery lives in the business at around 12 hours. There’s also 128GB of storage and 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM. It’s one of the best new laptops for Apple lovers, but keep in mind that this laptop is primarily designed to work with cloud storage and eschews features like disk drives. The price has been lowered to $899.
2. Dell XPS 13
If you’re looking for a more traditional laptop with a Windows operating system, this is one of the best available on the market. The latest version comes with an option touch screen, a 128GB SSD, 8GB of memory, and a 5th generation Intel Core i5 processor. The 13-inch screen is also a welcome edition, and comes in an “infinity display” with borders that you can barely see. If you and Apple products don’t get along, this is a great alternative to a MacBook and the touchscreen is a great bonus. However, this laptop comes in at a decent price.
3. Asus Transformer Book T200
Some of the most exciting work in the laptop world is happening in hybrids these days – those laptops that can be taken apart so the screen functions as a tablet that you can carry around. Out of the options, this Asus Transformer Book is one of the best. The T200 offers a 12-inch detachable screen, an Intel 64 bit quad core 1.59GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 64GB SSD for storage. The battery life is around 9 hours, and note that this laptop, at around $500, comes with all the ports you could wish so you don’t have to sacrifice connections.
4. Aorus X7 Pro
Aorus may not ring a bell when it comes to top laptop brands. That’s because Aorus is highly specialized: They make gaming laptops that you can take on the road without being afraid of losing resolution or not having enough RAM to play the latest and greatest games. This model is one of the best new laptops for gaming and comes with a GTX 970M graphics chip, a massive 17.3-inch screen, plenty of top-notch cooling features, and a bunch of beloved programmable macro keys. The hard drive can hold up to 3.5TB, and there are 3 mSATA SSDs as well. It’s hard to do better if you love gaming, but you’ll have to pay for it.
5. Toshiba Chromebook 2
A Chromebook is another unique style of laptop, an ultra-portable model designed using the Chrome OS, which is of course the operating system made by Google and based on its popular browser. If you love Google services and products, then consider this 13.3-inch laptop. Its battery life can last up to 9 hours, and while its Intel Celeron processor is nothing special and it only comes with 16GB of SSD memory, this laptop is one of the least expensive on the list, starting at $329.99 (and like the Air, is designed for cloud data work).
6. Microsoft Surface Pro 3
Let’s take a look at another hybrid laptop, this time directly from Microsoft. The Surface Pro 3 is a one of the best new laptops for business, with a 12-inch screen, up to 256GB in hard drive space, and up to an Intel i7 1.7GHz processor. Feel free to customize this one as much as you want, but don’t forget your stylus! A lot of people have been edgy about Surface laptops because of concerns about Windows 8 issues, but the Pro 3 will be getting an upgrade to Windows 10, making those concerns dated and this laptop very competitive. Prices start at $799 but you’ll have to pay more than $1,500 for the top shelf specifications.
