Research company DisplaySearch reports that shipments of 4K TVs increased over 500 percent in the third quarter of 2014 compared to the same time period in 2013.
The 3 million sales are an all-time high, and there have been 6.4 million 4K TVs shipped in the first nine months of 2014.
The United States seems to be a bit behind China for now, the report said. China is the leading consumer of 4K TVs with over 60 percent of the shipments.
“With a scarcity of content and streaming options, much of the early success for 4K will rely on education campaigns from brands and price compression that will make it more affordable,” director of global TV research for DisplaySearch Paul Gagnon said.
Samsung accounted for over one-third of 4K TV shipments from July through September, followed by LG (15 percent) and Hisense (10 percent).
